Malet Veale Families
Henry Mallet Veale was born in Cottesmore, Rutland, England in 1830 to James Harris Veale
and Emily Nevile (of the Neviles of Wellingore and Aubourn,Lincolnshire). His family lived
for some 300 years at Passaford,a mile outside of the village of Hatherleigh, Devon.
When he was 20 he went to stay at the rectory in Kings Nympton, Devon, to study Latin under
his kinsman, the Reverend Frederick Alexander Savile. He fell in love with and wanted to marry Elizabeth Saunders, whosefather
farmed the glebe in that village. His parents didn'tapprove of this
match, and packed him off to Cape Colony to manage some newly acquired farms there. The
"intrepid Miss Saunders" followed him to the Cape, where they apparently had five children
before they married, and then five more. He returned to Passaford in about 1879, after both
his parents had died.
