Student at CLARE, c. 1720; contemporary and friend of William Allen (1720). 2nd s. of Robert, merchant, of London; afterwards of Linton, Kent. Friend of Horace Walpole and made, by Sir Robert Walpole, assistant to Fane, Envoy at Florence, 1737. Succeeded Fane as Envoy, 1740-86. Communicated with the Government chiefly about the Pretender and his family. Created Bart., 1755. K.B., 1768. Kept up a voluminous correspondence with Horace Walpole, valuable as illustrating Florentine society. Died at Florence, Nov. 6, 1786. Buried at Linton, Kent. Brother of Edward Louisa. (W.
