Individual Note: Maria was born in Stuguvattentjalen, Junsele, Vasternorrland, Sweden. Godparents listed were: Inh. Nils Ersson at Stuguvattentjalen, Karl Nilsson at Wallen, Arvid Aug Nilsson at Stuguvattentjalen, and Piga Lovisa Erika Nilsson at Westeras (in 1890, living at Wallingberget, married to Adam Oskar Akerstrom, a shoemaker, and with one child.
Maria Styf, 20 years old, from Junsele, emigrated from Gothenburg 13 May 1904 and her destination was Winnipeg Man. Ref source 75:503:7593 she travelled alone.
Had a number of brothers and at least one sister in Sweden. One of Maria's brothers apparently came to North America, but disappeared around 1918. Charles used to write to a nephew of Maria's, but the nephew went into a sanatorium in Sweden with tuberculosis, and they never heard from him again. During the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918, Maria went around the district nursing people who had the flu, but never caught it herself. She liked to read the Scandinavian newspapers and often took out a subscription to them until her husband would say she was wasting money. Then she'd cancel them for a while, then wait for an interval and start them up again. Apparently Charles would also read the newpapers. She didn't speak much, if any, English.
There are no early pictures of the family. Hilda says that Charles turned religious at one point and destroyed all the photographs. She remembers them having a photo of Augusta, a sister of Maria's. My mother, Sophia (called 'Fia', with a long 'i' sound) by her sisters, said that he belonged to a church called the 'church with no name' or the 'church of the round table', and I seem to recall researching a church similar to this at one time in Saskatchewan.
