School, Westminster. Matric. Michs. 1818; Scholar, 1820; M.A. 1821. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Nov. 12, 1821. Took Holy Orders. C. of Cossington, Leics. Minister of St John's Chapel, Bedford Row, London, 1827-48. Became a leading Evangelical preacher. Chaplain in Ordinary to the Queen, 1841-9. Resigned from the Church of England, Aug. 9, 1849, and was baptised, by immersion, in John Street Baptist Chapel. Baptist minister there, 1849-68. President of the Baptist Union, 1855 and 1867. Gave vigorous support to the North in the American Civil War. Married, Oct. 17, 1826, Jane, eldest dau. of Peter Baillie, of Dochfour, Inverness-shire. Author of religious and controversial works. Died Jan. 19, 1873, at Stanmore, Middlesex. Father of Ernest (1856) and Wriothesley B. (1846); brother of Charles N. (1801), Gerard T. (1801), Berkeley O. (1819), and Leland (1817).
