Individual Note: Mary K. McKinley and I are both looking for the Wynne and Ottley connection. I found in the book on the history of Antigua (in the West Indies), a quote about him, and told Mary. Here is her response to me." Some time ago you advised that an obituary appeared in "Gentleman's Magazine" for BWO. I wrote to the London Archives and they sent the following:'August 1840 issue:June 1. At Brompton, aged 75, Colonel Benjamin Wynne Ottley. He entered the army at the age of fifteen, as an ensign in the 87th Foot; and was in unceasing employment for more than forty years. He was for thirteen years a subaltern officer; six years a Captain, the whole of which time he was in the West Indies, then (in 1806) he purchased his Majority, in the 91st foot; he was eleven years regimental Major during four of which he had the brevet rank of Lieut-Colonel; and he was upwards of ten years a regimental Lieut-Colonel in the 70th Foot, eight of which he had the rank of Colonel in the army. Of this long service, twenty-one years were passed on foreign stations. His service in America, the West Indies, Spain and Holland; and after being in several minor actions, was at the battles of Roleia, Vimiera, and Corunna, as Major of the 91st; and at the assault of Bergen-op-Zoom he commanded one of the columns of attack, and took the work he was sent against, in the accomplishment of which he was severely wounded. Upon his return to England in 1822, the King, in consequence of the high testimonials to his services, was graciously pleased to allow him to sell out, retaining the rank of Colonel in the army.'"Mary's comment to me was: "The obit did not mention family members (oh darn), but does give a rather detailed military history. The Archives had suggested that BWO had been married at least four times but could only verify two sons - Benjamin Robert and Isaac."They also confirmed that BWO is buried in the Trinity Church cemetery in Brompton."Seeing that he served on both sides of the Atlantic, does anyone have any more information on this gentleman and his ancestors, which are both Ottley and Wynne?Thank you.Nevilla and Mary
