Individual Note: Entered Navy at age 11 on the Hannibal with his father. Attended Royal Naval College. Commander of the Challenger in South America in 1833. Wrecked on the coast of Chili in May, 1835. Captain of the Fleet in the Baltic in 1854. Fought in the second China War of 1856. Returned to England in 1859, rewarded a G.C.B.
1881 census: living at Eltham House, Eltham, Kent, England with daughter Dorothea Mackenzie and her husband retired Rear-Admiral Donald Mackenzie, daughter Georgina Seymour and servants.

Individual Note: Acceded May 31,1809.
Joined the Navy in November, 1780, serving first in the Merlin sloop with Captain James Luttrell. Two year later, on the Mediator, he took part in a very severe action. His ship of only 44 guns attacked five French frigates, capturing two and putting the rest to flight. Promotion to lieutenancy on the Magnificent in 1790. Badly wounded in June,1794, in Lord Howe's memorable action, losing his left arm. Commander of the Spitfire guarding the Channel from 1796 to 1800. Appointed commander of the 36-gun frigate Amethyst in 1806. On the 10th of Novermber, 1808, the Amethyst captured the French frigate Thetis after one of the most desperate sea-fights of the whole war. Created a baronet under George III as a reward for his distinguished conduct and received a special compliment from the king. Made K.C.B in 1815. Sent to Rio de Janeiro as captain in chief of English Navy in South America. Died on shore of a fever in July, 1834 and was buried in the English cemetery in Rio.

THIS MOST DISTINGUISHED OFFICER AND AMIABLE MAN WHOSE HEROIC EXPLOITS ARE RECORDED IN THE ANNALS OF HIS COUNTRY, LOST AN ARM WHEN SERVING AS LIEUTENANT ON BOARD THE "MARLBOROUGH" IN THE MEMORABLE ACTION OF THE 1ST JUNE 1794 AND WHILST IN COMMAND OF THE "AMETHYST", FRIGATE OF 36 GUNS, CAPTURED AFTER TWO WELL CONTESTED AND SANGUINARY ACTIONS THE FRENCH FRIGATES "THETIS" AND "NIEMAN" OF 46 GUNS EACH, FOR WHICH HE RECEIVED A MEDAL AND WAS CREATED A BARONET. HE SUCCESSIVELY COMMANDED THE "HANNIBAL" (IN WHICH SHIP HE CAPTURED THE FRENCH FRIGATE "SULTANE") THE "NORTHUMBERLAND" AND TWO OF THE ROYAL YACHTS AND WAS COMMISSIONER OF THE NAVAL DOCKYARD AT PORTSMOUTH UNTIL APPOINTED TO THE SOUTH AMERICAN COMMAND.
