Individual Note:
     First son of Rear Admiral Sir Michael Seymour, KCB and Jane Hawker. The father, Sir Michael Seymour, distinguished himself as commander of several ships, including the Mediator, the Magnificent, the Spitfire, and the Amethyst, during the period 1780-1810, all victorious in several important battles at sea. Sir Michael Seymour was created a baronet under George III as a reward for his distinguished conduct, and made KCB in 1815. Sir John Hobart Seymour became second baronet through inheritance of the title and entered the ministry. Rector of Northchurch, Herts; Canon of Gloucester Cathedral, Chaplain in Ordinary to Queen Victoria. Assumed the prefix surname of Culme by royal license on May 6, 1842, after his marriage to Elizabeth Culme. Second wife was Maria Louisa Smith.

Individual Note:
      Edward Hobart Seymour (1840-1929), vice admiral and commander-in-chief of the British Far East Fleet. At the authorization of the Eight-Power Allied Forces and the consuls of the powers in Tianjin, Seymour led an army of 2,000 that landed at Tanggu, Tianjin, to advance toward Beijing in the morning of June 10, 1900, thus launching a war against China without declaration.
