Note for:   Henry Bathurst,   16 Oct 1744 - 5 Apr 1837         Index

Individual Note:
Henry Bathurst was the seventh son of Benjamin Bathurst. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. In 1775, he was appointed canon of Christ Church, Oxford. Canon of 7th preb., Christ Church, Oxford, 1775-1795. In 1795, he was made prebendary of Durham. He was consecrated bishop of Norwich in 1805. Bishop of Norwich. "Famously idle". Held office as the Bishop of Norwich from 1805-1837, until the age of 92. He declined the Archbishopric of Dublin when he was 87. He was a shockingly bad administrator, greatly addicted to whist, and to long sojourns at Bath and Malvern (in his defense, the bishop's palace was in very poor repair). 'They blame me for playing cards', he wrote, 'but I can't see to read or write and I can see the spots on the cards, so I may without sin amuse myself in this way'. On Prebendary Adam Sedgwick's first visit to dinner at the biship's palace he was invited, as was customary, to play a rubber of whist. When he declined, through ignorance of the rules, Bathurst lamented to his guest, ' I have consistently supported the Whigs all my life - I believe I am the only Liberal bishop - and now in my old age they (Lord Melbourne's Whig Government) have sent me a canon who does not know spades from clubs'. Bathurst was genial, with a fund of common sense. It was during his long tenure at Norwich that some wit dubbed it 'the Dead See'.
He was famed as the only bishop to support the 1832 Reform Act, as the idlest occupant of the bench of bishops, and as a compulsive whist player.
