Manuscript Collections of the College of Charleston
Georgetown County, South Carolina rice plantation owner. Plowden Weston came from Warwickshire, England, to the colony of South Carolina in 1757 and established himself in trade in Charleston (S.C.). He bought Laurel Hill Plantation in 1775 and adjoining lands in 1777. Plowden Weston accumulated a great fortune, the bulk of which he left to two sons, Dr. Paul Weston (1784-1837) and Francis Marion Weston. Francis Marion Weston lived at Laurel Hill Plantation. His son, Plowden C.J. Weston, was tutored by Rev. Alexander Glennie from 1828 to 1831.
Papers consist of Plowden Weston's business ledger (2 volumes), a plantation journal, and meterorological records for All Saints Parish, South Carolina.
Ledger (1764-1769) contains accounts with numerous individuals and several estates of individuals. The ledger was also used as a plantation journal and contains entries and accounts (1830-1847, 1851, 1855) pertaining to Weston family plantations.
Plantation journal (1802-1817) contains primarily accounts for the purchase of supplies for Waccamaw plantations (Laurel Hill and Holly Hill) and for the sales of rice. Interspersed among these accounts are lists of slaves, accounts for Francis M. Weston, accounts with Gaillard & Mazyck, medical "receipts," copies of letters, and miscellaneous entries.
"A Meteorological Table kept by Plowden C.J. Weston" for "All Saints Parish, Waccamaw, South Carolina" (November 1829 through December 1833) records readings of temperature, barometric pressure, and wind direction, and includes comments about the weather (cloudy, clear, fine, and similar remarks).
