Individual Note: Served during the Indian Mutiny as a Lieutenant in the 75th Regiment (Indian Mutiny Medal), taking part in the repulse of the attacks on the Alum Bagh made by the mutinous Sepoys between December 1857 and February 1858. Subsequently, while serving as Brigade Major at Peshawar in 1869, his devotion to duty during a severe attack of cholera, while himself suffering from fever, attracted the special notice of the renowned General, Sir Samuel Browne, who in a letter to the Adjutant-General at Simla, dated November 1869, brought his services to the notice of the Commander-in-Chief in the most flattering terms.
