Individual Note:
Educated Rugby School. Intended to enter the Army by way of Army Exam. at Sandhurst. His Latin was weak so he went to the rector at Kings Nympton for coaching in this subject. There he met Miss Elizabeth Saunders daughter of a yeoman farmer, Francis Saunders. Henry's father, with his ideas of aristocratic ancestry disapproved of his son's connection with Miss Saunders. The you couple proved impervious to argument and in order to separate them James Harris Veale bought a block of land at Kouderiviere near Caledon, Cape Province, South Africa and Henry was ordered by his father to go out and farm this land. Having no other means of subsistence Henry obeyed. The intrepid Miss Saunders followed him and they were not married until shortly before their sixth child was to be born. Henry had been christened Mallet Veale and this name was incorporated as a family name from this time. There was no deed of formal licence for this, it was a pretty general practice at this time. This branch of the Veale family called itself Mallet Veale from this time on.
Settled Kouderivier in 1852, and bought or acquired by grant a number of other farms between Arniston and De Kelders in Western Cape Province, South Africa . They practised ostrich, sheep, and grain farming.

Returned to England 1880. Two of his children were being raised and schooled in England by parents James Harris Veale and Emily. . In 1892 Henry and second wife, Ellen (Edmonds, nee Farrow) went to South Africa and brought back Ralph and Violet to be raised in England. Henry let Passaford in 1900 and lived in Exeter, Posbury, Budleigh Salterton, and finally Exmouth, where he died in 1905.

Henry and Elizabeth were married in the Holy Trinity Church in Caledon, Western Cape on May 17, 1864. In settling Henry's estate after his death in 1905 in Exmouth, Devon, a notarized letter was made up by lawyers Guthrie & Theron in Caledon attesting that the children born out of wedlock before this marriage were the children of both parents and entitled to their share of the proceeds of the estate, and a copy of the marriage from the parish church in Caledon was filed along with the estate papers.
