Individual Note:
     Spelled as "Vele" in parish record birth for Mary Veale. Matriculated Lincoln Coll. Oxon. Instituted Vicar of Winkleigh on June 15th, 1605. He married Alice daughter of Richard Bayley, Rector of Iddesleigh. He was instituted Rector of Iddesleigh on Mr. Bayley's death in 1616. Walter bought Passaford House and Estate from James Hawell of Henesbeare, Bickington near Ashburton in 1618.

Veale, Walter, of Devon, pleb. Lincoln Coll., matric 10 oct 1594, aged 19, B.A. 20 Jan 1595/6, M.A. 10 june 1607, then in orders, vicar of Winkleigh 1603, and rector of Iddesleigh, Devon 1616; father of the next, of Richard and of Samuel 1655.
    In Iddesleigh Church: 3. on the floor of the north aisle: a Latin inscription to WALTER VEALE Rector of Iddesleigh, died 1636. He was baptised 16 Nov 1575 at Monkleigh, son of John VEALE

I Walter Veale of Passaford in the Parish of Iddesleigh in the County of Devon While being sick and weake of Body but perfect in remembrance Thanks be to Almighty God do thus make my last will and Testament in manner and form following First I commend my soul unto Almighty God my only Maker and Redeemer and my body to buried after Christian burial form I give and bequeath unto Alice Veale my well loved wife all my Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments c____ appurtenances called and knowne by the name Passaford therwith now and Heretofore ___ and___ situated in the parish of Hatherley in the sayde county of Devon to have and to hold the same to her for during the terme of her natural life also repayring and maintaining in all needs full requirement During the sayde terme And after Death of her must give and bequeath the aforesaid Messuage of Passaford to James Veale my youngest Sonne to have and to hold the same in Estate___ after the sayde his Mother’s Death unto him the sayd James Veale for ___. But if the sayde James Veale shall chance to marry and dies without issue That then after the decease of the sayd James Veale and his wife the Messuage of Passaford shal remayne to the sayd James’ his brothers Walter and Samuell and to their ____ And for want of issue of the sayd Walter and Samuell after their deceases to remain to the ___ of their sisters Mary and Susanna and to their _____. Moreover I will that the sayd James my sonne doe pay unto Susanna my daughter the sum of fifty pounds of lawfull English money within two years after the death of the sayd Alice my wife which money if the sayde James his Executors or Assignees shall neglect or ___ to pay to the sayd Susanna her Executors or Assignees at the appointed time that then it shall be lawful for her to enter upon and quietly enjoy the sayd Messuage of Passaford until my sonne as the foresaid manager belatedly pays I do devise give and bequeath unto Samuel Veale my Sonne all that my Advowson all rents tithes and oblations benisons profitts and emoluments whatsoever of and belonging or in any sorte appertayning to the parrish church and Chappell of Egloskerry and Tremayne in the County of Cornwall to have and to hold the same to the sayd Samuell and his heirs. But if the Samuel Veale chance to marry and dies without issue That Then after the deaths of the sayd Samuel Veale and his wife the sayd Advowson and Rents tithes oblatones obsonton and profits and Emoluments of and belonging on in any sorte appertayning to the sayd Parish Church and Chappell of Egloskerry and Tremayne shall remayne to the sayd Wallter and James his brothers and to their heirs for ever. I give and bequeath unto Walter my sonne All that my graunte of the Advowson of the ____ parish church or Rectory of Iddesleigh aforesaid and the sayd Avowson all my interest and of ___ of in and to the same Also I give and devise unto the sayd Walter Veale my sonne one bedstead in the _____chamber so ____ ____ embody performed. Also I give and bequeath unto the sayd Walter my sonne the gray Mare Colt ____. I give devise and bequeath unto Susanna my Daughter the summe of two hundred and fifty pounds of lawfull money of England whereof one hundred pounds to be payd within one whole year after my Decease and another hundred pounds to be paid with the third year after my decease. And fifty pounds to be paid to my sonne James Veale his Executors or Assignees within two years after the decease of his Mother Alice Veale. Also I give and bequeath unto the sayd Susanna my Daughter the e____ of my L____ and the appurtenances called Lane-End or lying at Lane ___ within the sayd parish of Iddesleigh together with the Rents thereof to have and to hold the same to her son Executors and Assignees immediately from and after the decease of my sayd wife for and during all my terme interest and estate ____ shall be then to ____ and provided of and in the same ____ whereas Philipp Finch of Harrford in the Countie of Devon has mortgages onto me though formerly part of a common with the appurtenances called Meads also Biddon Meads lying within the parish of Harfford within the said County of Devon for the summe of thirty eight pounds of lawfull English money to him by me paid and Jehovad by way of Mortgage, which ____ parte I do hereby give and bequeath unto Mary my Daughter During her life and after her Death So to remayne to her son Adam Finch and to his heirs forever And if the sayd Adam dies without issue, then to remayne to his brothers and their heirs successively. ______ ______ the sayd Phillip Finch is indebted unto me Twenty eight pounds I do hereby give and bequeath the sayd summe of Twenty eight pounds unto Richard William and Walter sonnes to the said Phillip Finch which shall be paid unto them in equal portions when they shall be of age which is one and twenty years ___ I give and bequeath unto my sayd sonnes Walter and Samuell all my books of ____ for to ___ to be equally divided between them Amen I give and bequeath unto the poore of the sayd parish of Iddesleigh 200 pounds to be distributed according to the discretion of my Executors From the residue of all my goods ____ and chattels hereby not formerly given and bequeathed my funeral expenses affrayed and debts and legacies being paid and satisfied I give and bequeath unto the sayd Alice my wife ordayne and make her my sole Executrix of Ano my last will and testament Published the seventh of June in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and forty three in the presence of those whose names are underwritten Walter Veale Sealed signed and delivered in the presence of whose names are underwritten Hon Estatum _____ Moyse ___Thomas Webber
