INVENTOR OF PIT SHAFT SAFETY DEVICE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We regret to have to inform this week the death of Mr. Alfred West, which took place at this residence, Rydings Hall, Birstall, on Sunday evening. Mr. West was exceedingly well known throughout the district, having been chairman and managing director of the White Lee Colliery Co., Birstall, ever since its formation nearly thirty years ago. A colliery, however has been situated in that district for a century and a half, and Mr. West's grandfather, the late Mr. Bastowe, sank the original shaft at the White Lee pit. Mr. West was born of a colliery family which hailed from Halifax. Formerly he took an active part in the life of Birstall, being a member of the old Local Board for twelve years, during which period he occupied the chair. For several years he was Birstall's representative on the Dewsbury Board of Guardians, and was also a member of the Birstall Chamber of Commerce.

Mr West was of an inventive turn of mind. It was the deceased gentleman who brought into existence West's Simplex safety hook for preventing over-winding, which is well known and extensively used in collieries. He was also associated with Mr. Gillott, a Barnsley gentleman, in getting out a coal-cutting machine, still well known, and with Mr. Russell, a Government geological surveyor, in preparing a geological survey of the Birstall district. Mr. West was a Churchman, and a strong Conservative in politics, in which he took a great interest. He had resided at Rydings Hall (The Thornfield Hall of "Jane Eyre") for 64 years. Within recent years Mr. West has lived a quiet life, although he was engaged in business matters until about ten weeks ago, when his health began to fail.

The internment took place at Birstall on Wednesday, and was of a quiet nature. The funeral cortege proceeded from the house to the Parish Church, where a service was held, conducted by the Reverend F. Sykes, of Morley. The mortal remains were afterwards laid to rest in the adjoining churchyard. The chief mourners were the deceased gentleman's three sons, Dr. L. F.West (now of Birmingham), Mr. D. Arnold West (of Wakefield), and Mr. C. A.West (of Sheffield). Mr. H. Day (director of the White Lee Colliery Company), Mr. P. Kench (son-in-law), Mr. P. Kench jun., Mr. D. Hirst (nephew, of Bradford), Mr. S. Walker (York), Mr. E. Garbutt, Mr. A. Ackroyd (Eccles), and Dr. A.G.S. Broughton (Batley).

There were also present Councillors J.T. Wilkinson (chairman), W.O.R. Holton, and J. Garbutt (Birstall District Council), Dr. R.A. Forsyth (Medical Officer of Health), Alderman J. Illingsworth (Batley), Major T. Newcome (Dewsbury), Mr. J. A. H. Radcliffe (secretary Birstall Chamber of Commerce), Mr. C. Creighton, Mr. A. Stockdale, Mr. A. Porritt, Mr. Deaking (manager, White Lee Colliery), Mr. F. Greenwood (late of Morley Main Collieries), Mr. W. Crowther, and seventeen of the deceased gentleman's former employees. The following employees acted as bearers: - Messrs. J. Clark, G. Simpson, A. Hirst, H. Brown, S. Keighley, J. Jubb, S. Jubb, and J. Beames.

There were beautiful floral tributes from the family, "Elsie" (daughter-in-law), "His Sister" (E.J.West), Dr. and Mrs. A.G.S. Broughton, "Phil and Kate and the children", Mr. and Mrs. W.O.R. Holton, Winifred M.F. Smith (Sheffield), Mr. Herbert Day and Mr. Henry Day, Mr. and Mrs. Lyon, Mr. and Mrs. Dollimore (Hitchin), "Millie" (maid), Manager and Deputies of White Lee Colliery, Office Staff, Topmen and Teamers of White Lee Colliery, and Miners of White Lee Colliery.
