Individual Note: Sir Christopher died in 1692, leaving no
issue. His original will is with these documents. For want of issue,
he left the greater part of his estate, Haddington and Aubourn, waith
lands in Harmston, Thorpe on the Hill and South Hykeham to trusteea
who were to raise funds to pay his debts and legacies (the latter excee,ded
I,750 Pounds), if his personal estate was insufficient for the purpose. They
were then to be held to the use ‘of Gervase Nevile, eldest son of Brian
Nevile, and then of his sons in tail. Brian Nevile was the testator’s
cousin, a younger son of George Nevile of Stapleford and Thorney,
brother of Sir Gervase Nevile. He was also the husband of the testator’s
niece Martha, daught’er of Thomas Ellis of Wellingore and the testator’s
sister Jane. It was primarily as grandson of Jane Ellis, one of the testator’s
sisters and coheiresses, that Gervase Nevile inherited.
Geavase Nevile (d: 1728) who inherited the main part of the estate
of Sir Christopher Nevile of Aubourn, also inherited other valuable
estates from his parents and grandparents. His grandfather George Nevile
of Stapleford and Thorney, second son of George Nevile of Aubourn, had
been vigorous in building up a landed estate. He had bought the manor
of Thorney from his father and his brother, Sir Gervase, in 1637. This
manor was to descend to his eldest son and heir, George, one of the children
of his first wife, Alice. In 1641, for 5,000 Pounds he bought from the five
