[2nd, but only surviving] of Geoffrey, of [Boughton-Malherbe and] Egerton, Kent, M.P. for Maidstone [and Sarah, dau. of John Gregory, of London]. [B. Feb. 2, 1743-4.] School, Charterhouse. Matric. Michs. 1761; M.A. (per Litt. Reg.) 1763. Succeeded to his father's estates, 1756. Knighted 1768 (when acting as proxy for his uncle, Horatio, at his installation as K.B.). M.P. for Maidstone, 1774-84; for Sandwich in four Parliaments, 1790-1807. Succeeded his uncle in the Linton estate, Kent, and as 2nd Bart., Nov. 6, 1786. A notable athlete and cricketer; ‘in his old age was a devoted whist player.’ Married, Apr. 13, 1765, Lady Lucy, dau. of J. Baptist (Noel), 4th Earl of Gainsborough. In 1805 Sir Horace sold as much of the old estate as he could, but was not able to sell the settled (i.e. his father's) estate see U24/T4, U24/430. Linton Place and certain other Linton properties were bought in by James Mann (son-in-law of Sir Horace) and were subsequently sold in 1820 by him to his namesake James Mann (James Cornwallis; he assumed the name Mann in 1814 by royal licence in accordance with the terms of the Will of Galfridus.), son of James Cornwallis, Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. Meanwhile this James Mann had inherited the settled estates upon the death of Sir Horace (his uncle) in 1814. He succeeded his father as 5th Earl Cornwallis in 1824
