3. Thos. Malet Charter of Bishop's Lydeard. Lease and release of all manors and estates held by Luttrell for Lethbridge,

DDWO BUNDLE 2 33/2/1 Documents in a case between 1) Eliz. Metford Charter and Thos. Pattenand 2) Sir John Trevelyan, Bt. concerning a conveyance (1788) of land in Seaton. Including printed appeal from Chancery to the House of Lords, a copy of valuation of Seaton 1785, and Chas. Rowcliffe's bills for case (1826-46), and several subsidiary actions (total over £4,000). [Thos. Charter of Bishop's Lydeard was steward for Sir John Trevelyan's Devon and Somerset estates 1770-1806 whilst Trevelyan lived in London. He also acted as his solicitor and confidential agent. In 1785 Treveyan needed money and asked Charter to sell the Seaton estate. Between 1785 and 1788 the property was valued and sold, much of it to Sir Thos. Acland and some of it to a cousin Jas. Charter of Exeter as trustee for himself. The property was then released to Thos. Charter unknown to Trevelyan. Charter was dismissed in 1806 and a dispute over accounts followed. Charter died in 1810 and in 1825/6 Trevelyan accidentally discovered the sale to Charter and the withholding of documents relating to Axmouth marsh. In 1827, Trevelyan filed a bill against Thomas Malet Charter, the son and heir, for a reconveyance but he died in 1828. His son Sir John Trevelyan continued to prosecute the matter and declared that the estate was worth far more than Thos. Charter paid for it. In 1836 Thos. << Malet>> Charter died leaving the Seaton estate to Thos. Patten and Hen. Warre to be sold to pay legacies and his wife Eliz. Metford Charter as his executrix. The case went against the Charters and their appeal to the Lords was dismissed.] 1785-1846 (66 items) BUNDLE 3 33/3/1 Further documents in the suit between Sir John Trevelyan and Thos. Charter and his representatives including papers concerning Charter's management of the estates, sales, correspondence etc.
